Today was voting day here in our fair town. Nothing too spectacular, just a little primary election to narrow down the playing field of those seeking the 3 soon to be open slots on our City Council.
Many won't look at this election as important enough to show up for, but in my opinion, there is NO election that we as American citizens can afford not to take part in.
For example, School board elections may seem hum-drum and meaningless (especially if you don't have any children in your local school system) BUT, our local school board has control of a LARGE chunk of our tax dollars... too large for me to pass over my chance to see that trustworthy and upstanding folks fill those positions.
Also, no one who enters into politics enters in at the top. No one wakes up one day and decides they are gonna run for President (ok, well maybe they do but they don't usually get too far). Nope, they all start out in local government. City Council, County Auditor, and yes folks, even School Board.
Just think about any unsavory politician who holds a high office (and BOTH parties have them people, don't misunderstand me). Think about all the little elections they had to win to get to where they are now. Just think... perhaps many of them are in high offices today just because some people didn't bother to show up and vote for the politicians tho actually have a shred of character (yes folks, they ARE out there) when their local City Council elections came around?
Just a little somethin' to think about.
Oh, and by the way, who decided that Religion and Politics have to be taboo subjects of conversation these days eh? It is my personal opinion that this country is in much of the mess it is in because of a LACK of conversation regarding those two subjects.
Just a little somethin' else to think about. :)
